Are Online Fitness Classes and Coaching Really As Effective as In Person?

We are often asked, "are online workouts and remote coaching really as effective as classes and training in a gym?"

And our answer, is yes!

When we opened the doors to Straight Up Strong in July 2020, our goal was to create an online fitness membership where women over 40 could get strong AF right from their homes. To build community with other like minded folks when the world was filled with uncertainty and isolation.

And over the past 18 months we have supported dozens of women to discover consistency and strength through lifting weights at home.

We have witnessed women master their first "on the floor push-ups," learn to safely deadlift and swing a kettlebell, and press weight overhead that they initially thought they would never be able to accomplish.

All from home.

All with dumbbells, kettlebells, body weight, and resistance bands.

The keys to "effectiveness" and progressing towards your fitness goals is a structured strength program designed to continuously challenge your body and a coach who is able to effectivly communicate with you, analyze data, and make adjustments to your programming based on your needs. Add in consistency with your workouts and you are in a great position to make progress towards your goals! You can have all of these in OR out of the gym setting.

In Straight Up Strong, we specialize in supporting in women over 40 with their unique needs and concerns in midlife (and beyond) without a diet and weight loss focus - which makes us unique to the fitness world that is so hyper focused on 20 year olds and weight loss. We know that many women are incredibly crunched for time and having access to high quality workouts and programming, highly qualified coaches and a kick ass community from home allows them to be more consistent, which is really and truly the secret sauce.

Working out at home helps folks be consistent in so many ways, but especially:

1. Takes out the extra commute time. When crunched for time, that additional 15 minutes each way to the gym can make or break if you'll workout.

2. Privacy and comfort - no more gym anxiety. While we believe a gym should be a safe and welcoming space for everybody, and everybody deserves to have this access, we know that this is not always the case for many folks in marginlized bodies. Working out at home can alleviate this stress and anxiety and help make working out something to look forward to as opposed to be nervous about.

3. Easy access to your own shower, which is another time saver especially for morning workouts.

4. Work from home? Jump into a lunch hour workout with ease!

5. When following a live session recording, you have the flexibility of making the session fit your schedule but still know exactly what to do. You get to partipate in your favorite training sessions on your schedule!

6. Less germs and weird gym smells 🤣

7. Wear whatever you want to workout in - pjs, sweats, fancy leggings- doesn’t matter at home - whatever helps you stay consistent!

8. Ability to workout out barefoot which has incredible benefits when strength training (more deets for a future newsletter!)

Benefits of having live online sessions and access to experienced coaches helps to ensure progress and safety because of true coaching - feedback on form, adjustments to programming when needed, and someone to answer your questions and check in on you. In Straight Up Strong, we are connected to our folks via in app messaging, live training sessions, and in our Facebook community. We truy have the perfect blend of coaching, programming and community to support you with consistency!
